Top Cleantech Stories Of The Day!

Top cleantech news of the day from CleanTechnica, the world's #1 cleantech or clean energy website:

Excerpts:

Solar PV Module Prices Have Fallen 80% Since 2008, Wind Turbines 29%

I know most of you have seen such graphs many times, but I can’t resist sharing another one every once in awhile. And the truth is, a lot of people are completely oblivious to this. Those who follow cleantech news know the strong trend, but the common person certainly doesn’t. Do everyone a favor — share this graph with your friends! Wind Power Prices Also Dropping Wind turbine prices have followed a similar (if not … Read More

Air Force Biofuel Program Gets A Lift From Coke

Now here’s an odd pairing for you: none other than the Coca-Cola company is a strategic partner behind a Wisconsin biofuel company called Virent, which has just announced that the Air Force will be testing one of the first batches of jet biofuel from its newly operative demonstration facility in Madison. This development is noteworthy because it produces drop-in replacements for petroleum fuels from a cocktail of different feedstocks, rather than relying on a single … Read More

"Saran Wrap" Thermoelectric Breakthrough Converts Leftovers To Electricity

Researchers at the University of Michigan have just announced a new breakthrough for making a class of relatively cheap thermoelectric materials that are as lightweight and tough as your favorite kitchen wrap. When wrapped around a hot object or a piece of motorized equipment, thermoelectric materials convert waste heat to electricity, and they can also be used to provide a cooling effect without the need for chemical refrigerants. While the new materials would still not … Read More

Germany's Offshore Wind Farm Alpha Ventus Fed 267.8 GWH Into Grid In 2012

Germany’s first offshore windfarm pilot project, “Alpha Ventus,” has produced some impressive results for 2012. Alpha Ventus exceeded expectations for its annual yield in 2012. The offshore wind farm fed 267.8 gigawatt-hours of power into the German power grid. With that, its power yield is 15.3% higher than the originally forecast value. The good trend also continued in the first quarter of 2013. 267 gigawatt-hours is enough electricity to supply clean, renewable energy to approximately 70,000 households. The Alpha … Read More

Researchers Construct Atom-Thin Solar Photovoltaic Device

An atom-thin photovoltaic device with high quantum efficiency has been developed by an international team of researchers, researchers from the University of Boston, University of Oxford, and the National University of Singapore. The atom-thin photovoltaic device has a quantum efficiency of 30%, which is simply a measure of the number of photons converted into charge-carrying electrons. To create the device, the researchers created a sandwich of a semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) and sheets of graphene. “The work … Read More

Graphene/TMDC Combination For Next-Gen Solar Cells

By combining the wonder material graphene with other one-atom-thick materials, such as TMDC, to make stacks/2D-crystals, it becomes possible to produce an enormous range of superlative properties, and likely to create the “next generation” of solar cells, according to researchers from the University of Manchester and the National University of Singapore. “Collectively, such 2D crystals demonstrate a vast range of superlative properties: from conductive to insulating, from opaque to transparent. Every new layer in these … Read More

Most Bicycle Friendly States — New Ranking

Cycling is one of the most environmentally sound modes of transportation, and it helps people to stay fit (and become fit). It is one way to address the massive obesity problem in the United States, an issue that is growing (I couldn’t resist that pun). A list of the most biking-friendly states has been released by the League of American Bicyclists, and I think it could encourage more people to ride… especially if the media … Read More

April EV & Hybrid Sales Report

Unfortunately, the report below doesn’t include Tesla sales, but it still rounds up April 2013 sales for the other hybrid and electric vehicles for sale in the US. Have a look and let us know your thoughts! Compared to April 2012, not many automakers can be too happy about their hybrid and electric vehicle sales. Basically, just Nissan and Ford have something to cheer about, and they certainly do!   Ford hybrid and EV sales … Read More

Sharp Boosts Its Triple-Junction Solar Cell Efficiency Another 0.02%, Regains The Record

Beyond details on the new efficiency record, this Solar Love repost below includes a bit more info on different types of solar cells, in case you are not aware of these differences and are now curious. Sharp has a long string of solar cell efficiency records. And it has just extended that string a little further. In 2009, Sharp landed a 35.8% triple-junction, non-concentrator solar cell efficiency record. It then went on to break that … Read More

Lockheed Martin To Build World's First Ocean Thermal Power Plant Off China Coast

Lockheed Martin have been working for forty years on harnessing energy from the massive temperature differentials in the ocean, and thanks to a partnership between the US defense and aerospace giant and a Chinese resort developer, a 10-megawatt power plant using ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) will be built off southern China’s Hainan Island. The agreement has been signed between Lockheed Martin and the Beijing-based Reignwood Group and will hopefully see the power plant completed by … Read More
