Khosla Ventures and Bill Gates energy company Total added $15 million in the LMBC (Liquid Metal Battery Corporation) funding.
The new battery technology uses molten metal. Its main attractions are: it uses plentiful cheap metals, and therefore costs are cheap (vs L - ion batteries.) It was invented by Ken Sadoway, an MIT professor on materials and chemistry
Cost comparison:
Lead - 35 wH/kg
Li Ion - 150 wH/kg
Gasoline - 12,000 wh/kg
Khosla venture is not a fan of L- ion technology
Automotive traction needs $l00-200 per kilowatt hour, stationary needs $50.00/kwh
