Gravity lights as alternative to kerosene lamps - safe and cheap

From Visual News on Gravity LIghts

I just watched a feature of Al Jazeera on gravity lights.  It is a cheap device about $10 each, the equivalent of 3 months supply of kerosene used in less developing countries.  The gravity light is powered by a 1 kg weight which turns around a plastic alternator and which powers a lone led lamp.
Kerosene is of course non renewable and is not safe -  can cause fire and is toxic to the residents.

Every time you raise the weight, the lamp is powered on for 30 minutes.  All it takes is muscle power to raise the weight.

It is no like the PET lamps by Illac Diaz which lights the house only in daytime.   The inventor is Martin Riddirford and Jim Reeves, who developed the device over a 5 year period.
