Excerpts:

New Alga Discovered In Colorado — Will Possibly Extend Biodiesel Production Northwards

Researchers have discovered a new type of strain of yellow-green algae — heterococcus sp. DN1 — that could potentially be a good source for biodiesel production and allow biodiesels to be produced much further north than they are now. They new strain was discovered living in the snow fields of the Rocky Mountains. H. sp. DN1 is apparently able to grow at very-low temperatures — near freezing — all the while accumulating large stores of … Read More

Siemens Installing America's First Regenerative Energy Storage Unit

Siemens, a German manufacturer of a wide variety of items (you could consider it Germany’s GE), is installing a regenerative braking energy storage system for the new TriMet Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Transit Line, a first in the US. It is the Sitras Energy Storage unit and is powered by ultracapacitors (sometimes called supercapacitors or EDLCs). Ultracapacitors are very heavy, but they can provide massive bursts of power very quickly, and that is desirable for acceleration of light rail … Read More

Europe's Anti-Dumping Tariff About To Finalize, Chinese PV Manufacturers' Three Contingency Plans

Apart from the rumor which says that China's going to impose anti-dumping tariffs on the imported polysilicon, the Chinese government continues to communicate with Europe's major member countries through diplomatic ways, hoping the member countries can encourage Europe to adopt a more moderate standpoint. The German government officials have spoken in succession lately indicating their disagreement with any regulations that may raise the possibility of a trade war. Sustainable Brands 2013 Day One | San Onofre Goes Solar!

Well, alright, it hasn't happened yet. But listening to various panelists talk about consumer research they've conducted, it's clear the public wants solar power much, much more than nuclear. Sustainable Brands 2013 launched with a day of workshops on a wide range of topics, with all sorts of interesting news. The panels I sat in ranged from one on Life Cycle Assessment to one on Systems Thinking. Driving past San Onofre on the way down from LA, it looked as ominous dormant as it did when it was active. They're threatening to re-open it, but with solar getting so cheap, is it really worth the risk?

Feed-in Tariff: A Policy Tool Encouraging Deployment Of Renewable Electricity Technologies

This post first appeared on the US Energy Information Administration Site Recent developments in Virginia put a spotlight on feed-in tariffs (FITs), which are a policy mechanism used to encourage deployment of renewable electricity technologies. FITs are used to a limited extent around the United States, but they are more common internationally. A FIT program typically guarantees that customers who own a FIT-eligible renewable electricity generation facility, such as a roof-top solar photovoltaic system, will … Read More
