Downside not many places have wind.

Which is better - wind or solar?

 Which is better - wind is solar?  The debate goes on and on   It is better to  have them hybrid.  

But hybrid wont work, if there is no wind, or there are days when there is no sunlight.   

Which is cheaper -  wind or solar.   Which is better - rooftop system or centralized system.

Why Pres Duterte Administration should push for renewable energy


The politicians and the advisers and the tycoons in the country engaged in energy development are pushing for coal fired (fossil fuel) plants despite on going  drive for going green.  The coal proponent say that  RE is expensive..  While coal fired plants are cheap in the beginning it becomes costly in the long run because of the coal importation, the health concerns, the environmental degradation.  Wind and solar power are free and have less maintenance expense.

Over 147 gW capacity has been installed worldwide costing $280 billion generating thousands of jobs.

Again to repeat the advantages of RE:


Renewables – as opposed to coal and other fossil fuel industries – typically have a relatively higher labor intensity, which means they spend more on hiring people; have a higher domestic content; and often produce higher-value, better paying, cleaner, and healthier jobs than the fossil fuel industry.
In sum, renewables can:
  1. Generate tens of thousands of jobs
  2. Save the government money in terms of tax revenue and foreign exchange savings
  3. Boost economic growth especially in vulnerable areas suffering from energy poverty
  4. Lower the cost of renewable energy for the long run by impacting the spot market
  5. Save customers money
The Philippines can speed up the energy revolution that is already underway, turn its back on coal, seize the moment, and lead the way for renewables in Southeast Asia while capitalizing on its success in renewable power generation such as solar and wind, including the manufacturing of solar PV panels. (There is all ready one such company) Embracing the energy revolution and harnessing renewables doesn’t mean bankruptcy and sacrifice. The facts show that it can bring us wealth, cost savings, and employment.

Yes and no.  Yes because he says so. But he bats for coal power because it is cheap (P3.00 /kwh as what former DOE sec Petilla has said)   So as a political creature, he is not ready for RE yet which can go up as high as P9/kwh.  (But take note this lessens dependence on coal importation and thus saves precious FX reserves)  Good for those in Semirara and other coal mines.  They say they can pulverize the coal to lessen CO2 emission

He merely wants to review the current project proposals at hand which coming from the big ones SMC, Aboitiz are all coal powered.  From GMA network  There are at least 50 coal powered plants in the pipeline.  Some quarters think that the first issue to be addressed are:

       1,  shortage of base load which only coal or hydro can provide (P3.00/kwh)  But hydro in Mindanao is unreliable because of the drought. Only  coal fired plants can provide this.  Hence it is tantalizing for politicians and Duterte is no exception to go for cheaper alternative. and that is coal

      But India is gunning up to 33 gW of wind energy and 90 gW of solar.  Can the Philippines be far behind (20 years behind if we continue on having coal fired plants   From Philnews. (RE challenges in the Philippines)

 Will Duterte push for renewables? And really be green?  In words and in deed.

In a recent meeting last week, I met the President of a newly acquired Rural Bank and I found out that they are about to start operations of a local PV manufacturing plant, the first of its kind in the country soon.  The plant is capable of producing 200,000 panels a month (that is about  1000 kW worth of panels every month. And half of that would be for export.

The man used to to head a major chemical firm in the country, put up a petrochem plant

He expects mega sales from that.  He said that they eliminated the use of silver as a conductor and this means lower lower price.

He promised to email me the prices which he said are way way way low vs imported and China products

I said that with the rural bank, we can provide solar financing that is affordable

Japan has 1.8 gW installed solar capacity for Q2 and this favors more installation.  What caused this surge?

You guessed it from FIT since 2012 and what was the cause?

You guessed it right again;  this was due to the TEPCo  Fukushima nuclear accident from the tsunami of March 2011.  The radiation, the evacuation, and the radiation leak from the meltdown has traumatized Japanese and many countries away from nuclear power plants. Since 2012, 3.67 gW of capacity has been installed;  about 7 gW could be installed by the end of the year.

There is a total of 17.8 gW of approved but not commissioned PV projects and the problem (as in PHL RE implementation) is grid connectivity.  Here it is  the net metering.  Only 50 kwh is allowed, and prices will be only equal to generating costs.   (Hahaha - that is the way to encourage renewables here in the PHL)

Big and profitable businesses like Walmart, Apple, Ikea, J & J Toyota, Loreal, VW have great business sense;  they went solar and so with the rest of top 25 companies who went solar in a big way

Going solar means good business and many companies across USA are adopting solar technology to save costs and improve bottom line.  So far,  since 2012, since inagural Solar Means Business, more than 1,000 mW of solar panels have been installed at rooftops of businesses, non profits and government offices.

There is a cumulative3380 mW of installed facilties at 32,800 across USA during the first quarter of 2013 and represents 40% increase over last year.  The top 25 companies using solar (Pareto principle) has 443 mW of installed capacities.

And their reasons, high RoI, lower costs, and better bottom line.  Solar panel costs have gone down by 40% down from $8.00/watt three years ago.  The ex China cost is $0.50 per watt.  Installed cost would be $3.00/watt in the PHL.  And this very competitive with hydro and bunker fuel which would be $4.00 per kW with higher operating and maintenance cost.  For the consumer this means peace of mind - Level Cost of Energy - LCOE of only P5.00 kwh!

In so far as we are concerned:  this is the progress we have made:

1.  For one of our parks, we are installing 2.5 kW and it will be finished within this month to save on our electric bills for irrigation which costs us almost P30,000 per month;

2.  We will be installing a 3 kW on the rooftop of a business associate in Valle Verde.  He is convinced that the best way to save electricity is to go solar.

3.  We have a project to convince an international church to go solar.  Their monthly electric bills amounts to P6 million  a month.

4.  We are going to finance solar installations and the MA will be savings.  We also would like to trade on solar aircon and LED lights.

Yesterday, we had a meeting with a businessman whose partnership included:   greenhouses, distant farms, golf courses and irrigation

We talked about the role of our group which will be financing the ownership.  He says he is more interested in the technical:  how this will be installed, maintenance, operations during brown out or at night.  Therefore, storage capability is needed as his proposed customers will be off grid. He says that  cost is not a matter of concern to those who:   do not have power and do not have access to the grid.  They use gensets and have deliveries of diesel by the truckload.

The solar installation in our Memorial Park will be a showcase and marketing tool.  Many rich residential installations are possible in that city

He will have one installed in his house in golf subdivision because his electric bill is about Pl6,000 per month.  His payback period is about a year for a 2 kwP is one year (without batteries)

For the golf courses, running the irrigation sprinkler system will be benefitted by a reduction in electricity bills

He and I hope that we will start a solar revolution in the PHL with these insights

Today, our team will visit a big church and their electric bills run into P50 million per month in just NCR alone.  I hope they will have great presentation to the church officials

Our staff says l mW target for homes, light commercial residential target feasible

Our staff, in our goal setting today, says that 1mW target is feasible.  Financing this is another story.  But knowing that solar is self liquidating (what you save in power will pay for its cost) will just be the obstacle.  It will mean a P140 million funding for the $3.5 million cost of the solar installation.

He says that his target includes farms, light commercial industrial, residential homes with high electric bills, golf courses with irrigation system, church.  The MVP will be reducing electrical consumption and this will include recommendation on led lamps which cost up to 70% less power.

Indonesia plans to build 36 PV power plants in 2013 worth $100+ million

Indonesia plans to put up 36 solar power plants in 2013.  The Indonesian government plus its local counterparts plan to fund this with one trillion rupiah (worth $l03 million) up from 700 billion rupiah last year.   The installation will be made at far flung areas.

The total solar installations in Indonesia will now total 153, up from 117.  Although Indonesia lags behind Thailand and Malaysia in solar developments, it is seen as an emerging solar market. (How about the PHL)

It is nice to know that there is a growing consciousness about solar in ASEAN.  We yet have to see this mindset in PHL.  What is going on in the PHL?  How many solar energy projects are on stream?

Are we ahead or behind Indonesia, other ASEAN countries?  What should energy leaders/managers in the country do, especially with electricity problems in Mindanao

Fossil fuels are still the in thing?   We are not adopting the modern safe, and clean renewable energy?

The link posts compelling reasons why we should go for alternative energy sources:  wind, solar and others.  In USA especially, you can not afford not to have power during snowstorm or bad weather.  Your family can die from freezing temperature.  Not to mention the increasing power costs from electric company.

Solar is cheap and free from the sun, after you have paid for the panels.

l.  CCTV installation;

2.  PV for a grocery

3.  PV for an irrigation system in a memorial park

4.  PV for hospitals and other commercial installation

5.  solar irrigation pumps



                          The mechanism is a drive shaft from top driving a differential

The design could be made more efficient by:

removing the steel assembly for the vane (seems heavy)

using thinner drive shaft (lighten the weight)

a rotary pump instead of the jack pump

The farm where we saw this needs:  solar energy and solar pump

Why it is time for us to go solar? (alternative energy)

I just learned that our electric bill in one site where we have extensive use of sprinkler system reached Pl6t for 1291 kwh;   it more than doubled.  If we multiply that by 12, that would be P192t a year.  Consumption for the month was 1291 kwh.

I asked a quotation for a solar system with inverter and it would cost P185t;   it would be recovered in one year.

Why is it that I only know about this technology?

It is time to save money;  it is time electricity and energy?
